Thank you for your recent email with regard to the Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering (SPICE).
It is important to note that, as the announcement made at the Bradford Science Festival underlines, the intention is to investigate the feasibility of this technique. This is very much a first step in providing an insight into the viability or otherwise of this approach.
The project is not to embark upon the technique itself, but to begin to investigate its feasibility.
Equally important to note is that an integral part of the governance process for the SPICE project is to genuinely assess the potential impactsof this new technology, beneficial or otherwise, and to open up dialogue and debate around these. As part of this, a multidisciplinary panel of experts has been set up to inform an on-going discussion as to how and if the technology should be developed now and in the future, which includes broad stakeholder engagement.
As I hope you can see, this is very much a first step to exploring feasibility and so, in our opinion, should pose no threat to existing dialogues and investigations.
