The experimental hose designed by British scientists (to put sulphates in the stratosphere) that we informed you about last week continues to provoke controversy and included in this update are a selection of items related to that:
1. A letter to the Guardian from the Royal Society President Paul Nurse which asserts first that they do not support explicitly this project but then goes on to say that they are working on governance issues related to solar radiation management research projects and yet… that experiments should be allowed go ahead. What Paul Nurse seems to miss is that in pharmaceuticals drug trials, experimental subjects are informed of the risks and required to give their consent. With geoengineering, no such consent has even been sought, much less given. [ READ HERE ]

Articles from Time Magazine, the New Scientist on the same topic, which are generally favourable to this experiment — please consider commenting on the original article website or writing a letter to the editor to underline that there are other views about this topic. Also, I wanted to bring to your attention an announcement of a conference in Australia on Southern Hemisphere perspectives on geoengineering: September 26-27 organized by the Australian Academy of Science.
